Trio of Beavers land on mag’s Pac-10 first team

By Bud L. Ellis

Three members of the Oregon State Beavers have earned preseason first-team All-Pac-10 honors. Their teammates hope to join them at the top of the conference come season’s end.

Oregon State enters 2010 with high hopes, having won six of its nine conference games last season en route to tying Arizona and Stanford for second (two games behind conference champion Oregon).

Junior running back Jacquizz Rodgers, who enters the season as a Heisman Trophy candidate, wide receiver James Rodgers (Jacquizz’s brother) and defensive tackle Stephen Paea all earned first-team conference honors, according to the Phil Steele 2010 College Football Preview. Jacquizz Rodgers and Paea also were named second-team preseason All-American by the magazine; James Rodgers landed on the third-team preseason All-American squad.

Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 5.3 yards per carry last season, on his way to a 1,440-yard, 21-touchdown season. His brother James Rodgers caught 91 passes for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns.

Oregon State opens the season on Sept. 4 at Cowboys Stadium against Texas Christian, then returns home to play host to Louisville in the home opener on Sept. 18.

Oregon State falls to BYU, 44-20

The Oregon State Beavers came out flat against the BYU Cougars and were embarassed in a 44-20 loss.

The game pitted one of the best teams in Pac-10 against one of the best in the Mountain West, and the non-BCS conference was able to prevail.

Oregon State seemed like a team that was either flat due to a three-week layoff between the season finale and bowl game or still disappointed about losing to Oregon and blowing a chance to play in the Rose Bowl.

The Beavers came out and put the first touchdown of the game on the board, but then saw the Cougars score the next 30 points en route to a very surprisingly easy victory.

It was not one of quarterback Sean Canfield’s better games, as he threw for just 168 yards and an interception. He did run for a touchdown to open up the scoring for Oregon State.

Beavers look to finish strong, slow BYU in Las Vegas Bowl

By Bud L. Ellis

Finishing second in the Pac-10 and just missing out on a trip to the Rose Bowl, the Oregon State Beavers nonetheless are ready to conclude their season with a victory.

To do that, they’ll face a BYU team that’s awfully familiar with the surroundings of the Las Vegas Bowl.

The 18th-ranked Beavers come into the game looking to finish at 9-4 on the season. In facing the 14th-ranked Cougars who currently are 10-2 in 2009, Oregon State meets a team making its fifth consecutive Las Vegas Bowl appearance. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PST Tuesday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

As it has all season, Oregon State will turn to quarterback Sean Canfield to lead the way offensively. Canfield led the Pac-10 with 3,103 passing yards, earning all-conference first-team honors. He connected for 21 touchdowns this season.

Providing balance is Jacquizz Rodgers, a first-team all-conference selection who set a school record 20 touchdowns while rushing for 1,377 yards.

That’s the 1-2 offensive punch the Beavers hope comes up a winner in Las Vegas. But the Oregon State defense will have to step up against a BYU offense ranked No. 13th in the nation in points scored and 18th in total yards.

Oregon State heads to Las Vegas Bowl, matchup with BYU

By Bud L. Ellis

Oregon State’s 2009 season has been defined by plenty of high moments. Now the Beavers get a chance to cap the campaign with one more highlight.

The Beavers, after finishing tied for second in the Pac-10, will take on Brigham Young in the MAACO Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Dec. 22.

For No. 16-ranked Oregon State, the matchup with No. 15-ranked BYU is an opportunity to finish with nine wins, and to extend its streak of five-straight bowl victories. That successful run is the second-longest current streak of bowl success in the nation.

The streak started in the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl, with a 55-14 victory over New Mexico.

In BYU, Oregon State faces a team with 10 victories, one that finished second in the Mountain West Conference. It’s the ninth meeting all-time between the two schools (the first time in a bowl game). The Beavers are 5-3 against the Cougars, winning the last meeting 10-7 back on Nov. 15, 1986.

(18) Oregon State vs. (14) BYU in Las Vegas Bowl

After falling just short of the Pac-10’s automatic berth into the Rose Bowl because of a 37-33 loss to Oregon last week, the Oregon State Beavers have a chance to bounce back against 14th ranked Brigham Young University in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22.

This will be the first meeting of two ranked teams in the history of the Las Vegas Bowl.

The Beavers lost their second straight shot at the Rose Bowl on the hands of the Oregon Ducks, who will be heading to Pasadena to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes this year. Last season, the Beavers needed a win in the Oregon Civil War to take a trip to Pasadena… but the Ducks came in and routed Oregon State, 65-38.

This season, it was a much closer affair, with the Beavers having a chance to grab the lead late against the Ducks. Sean Canfield, the Beavers’ quarterback, threw incomplete on fourth-and-15 from the Oregon 28-yard line to give the ball back to the Ducks, allowing them to ice the game.

The Beavers simply couldn’t get it done when it mattered most this year, as they lost to three of the four ranked teams on their schedule (with their only win over No. 20 California).

A loss to Cincinnati earlier in the year looks a lot more explicable now (considering that the Bearcats are undefeated and finished third in the BCS standings)… while losses at ranked USC (while they were still ranked) and Oregon make the Beavers’ only bad loss a 37-32 upset by Arizona.

BYU, who opened the season with a stunning upset of then-No. 3 Oklahoma (after Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury), only lost twice all season – a blowout at the hands of Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles early in the season, and a loss to then-No. 8 TCU (who will be playing Boise State in the BCS Fiesta Bowl).

BYU capitalized in overtime of their regular season-ending game against No. 21 Utah on Saturday, sending the conference-rival Utes into third place in the Mountain West Conference, and nearly out of the Top 25.

With the Las Vegas Bowl being the fourth to kick off during bowl season, look for this one to get the bowl season started right, as two Top-20 teams hungry for a final win will do whatever it takes to end the season as winners.

Oregon State set for Civil War

The Oregon State Beavers are set for what is by far their biggest game of the season.

The Civil War, the game between the Beavers and Oregon Ducks, is one of the most bitter rivalries in the country.

Very few know and understand the hatred between the two schools because it is a West Coast rivalry.

Nonetheless, it is one of the best and has even bigger implications this year than in past seasons.

The winner of this year’s tilt will be the Pac-10 champion and earn a ticket to the Rose Bowl to play Ohio State.

Oregon State comes up short vs. USC, 42-36

The Oregon State Beavers put up a good effort by came up just short against the host USC Trojans, 42-36.

Oregon State knew that they would be getting USC’s best effort after knocking off the Trojans last year. The Beavers fell behind 21-9 at halftime and the two teams each scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. That left Oregon State looking to make up almost a two touchdown deficit in the final quarter, and they came up a little short.
